Long term effects of untreated leaks:

Because of the recent droughts in Austin, locating and repairing leaks in your swimming pool is extremely important. Untreated leaks can cause:

  • Damage to the pool structure itself
  • Damage to the decking around the pool
  • Damage to the equipment
  • Damage to the surrounding landscape
  • Significant increases to your water bill
  • An increase in chemical costs because you're continually adding to diluted water
  • If you suspect your pool has a leak here are some easy steps you can take:

    1. Make sure that the problem is not something obvious like a leak at the equipment set, a fountain head spraying water or a backwash valve that is leaking water.

    2. The Bucket Test:

  • Make sure the water in the pool is at a normal operating level.
  • Fill a 5 gallon bucket with pool water to within a few inches of the top.
  • Place the bucket on the top pool step.
  • Mark the level of the water on the inside of the bucket.
  • Mark the level of the water on the outside of the bucket.
  • Turn off any auto fill but let the pool pump run normally.
  • Do not use the pool for 24 hrs.
  • After 24 hours, compare the two water levels.
  • If the water in the pool has gone down more than the water in the bucket, your pool probably has a leak. If the water levels remained the same, water loss is due to normal pool evaporation and use.
